Robert 's Experience

Sir Robert was first elected MEP for the North West region in 1999. He is Deputy Leader of the Conservatives in the European Parliament and Conservative Spokesman on Petitions in the European Parliament. He was Conservative Spokesman on Industry and External Trade from 2001-2004, and was Spokesman on Regional Policy, Transport and Tourism from 1999-2001. He is a member of the Transport & Tourism Committee and a substitute member of the Environment, Publich health & Food Safety Committee.

Sir Robert was MP for Preston North and South Ribble from 1979-97 and during that time served as DTI Minister (1987-89), Minister of Transport (1989-90), Minister of Sport (1990-92), Minister of State, Northern Ireland (1992-94) and Minister of State for Environment and Countryside (1994-95). He became a Privy-Counsellor in 1995. and was knighted in 1997.

About Robert

Born in 1946, Robert is married with two children. He is a member of English Heritage, National Trust, Victorian Society, Sherlock Holmes Society, MCC, Lancashire CCC, Middlesex CCC, Lord's Taverners, and the Carlton Club. His interests include cricket.

David Sumberg Den Dover MEP

Den's Experience

From 1979 to 1997 he was Member of Parliament for Chorley in Lancashire, serving on the Transport Select Committee for nine years and the Environment Select Committee for three years. He was Chairman of the Backbench Trade and Industry Committee for three years.

In June 1999 he was elected Member of the European Parliament for the North West. He was the Conservative Spokesman on the Budgets Committee for five years and is now Spokesman on Research and also Regional Development (Structural Funding). He is on the Industry Research and Energy Committee, the Regional Development Committee and the Transport and Tourism Committee. He was on the Employment and Social Affairs Committee and the International Trade Committee.

Before entering politics Den was in the construction industry with John Laing, George Wimpey, National Building Agency (Chief Executive) and was Director of Housing Construction with the Greater London Council. He has been involved in the building of shopping centres and offices throughout Europe.

Den has been a Director with manufacturing, mining, building materials, software, public relations and advertising companies. He is married with a son and a daughter. He plays cricket, golf and hockey.

About Den

Den was born in Stockton Heath, Cheshire and has also lived in Bootle, Southport and Chorley. He gained a First Class Honours degree in Civil Engineering at Manchester University and went to Manchester Grammar School where he won the bowling prize at cricket. He served on the London Borough of Barnet Council and was a Member of its Education, Finance and Public Works Committees.

Robert Atkins David Sumberg MEP

David's Experience

David has served at three levels of government. He represented Brooklands Ward on Manchester City Council from 1982 to 1984. From 1983 until 1997, he was a Member of Parliament for Bury South and during his time in the House of Commons, David served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Attorney General, was a member of the House of Commons Select Committees on Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs, was a member of the Executive of the British American Parliamentary Group and was a member of the Lord Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Public Records.

David was elected to the European Parliament in 1999 representing the North West of England.

He has always specialised in foreign affairs, both at national and European levels and he takes a close interest in relations with the United States of America.

About David

David entered national politics in 1983 having previously practised as a solicitor in Manchester specialising in corporate law.

He was born in 1941 in Stoke-on-Trent and is married to Carolyn who combines being a mature student, a freelance translator and assisting David with his parliamentary and constituency work. They have two adult children, Jonathan and Katie.

Work in the European Parliament

Every MEP is a member of two parliamentary committees; David sits on the Foreign Affairs, Human Rights, Common Security and Defence Policy Committee of the European Parliament.

He is also a member of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs. In addition, He is a member of the European Parliament Delegation for Relations with the United States and the Delegation for Relations with the Republic of South Africa. Within the Conservative Delegation to the European Parliament David is a member of the Bureau.


WORKING FOR THE NORTH WEST OF ENGLAND

One of the most important aspects of David's work is meeting as many people and organisations throughout the North West of England as possible. To achieve this, he regularly meets and visits a wide variety of businesses, companies, charities and social groups.

These meetings enable David to gain a full appreciation of the needs and concerns of the people living and working in the region so that European institutions can be made aware of these needs. At the same time, he tries to promote a greater knowledge of the work of the European Parliament and European institutions and the way in which the North West Region can benefit from them.
